News of the week #46

Already a month has passed since the last update. I was on tour for 2 weeks so I couldn’t really post here. Tons of new stuff added to the store with the new full length by CONVERGEBACKTRACK NO WARNING, UNIFIED RIGHT or QUICKSAND. A bunch of new 7″ from  CONVERGE, HANGMAN, HARNESS, FAZE. And 2 new books: STRAIGHT EDGE : A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History by Tony Rettman and XXX Fanzine (1983-1988): Hardcore & Punk In The Eighties by Mike Gitter. And also a lot of other new releases and restocks listed bellow.

NEW RECORDS

Converge – The Dusk In Us [LP]

Five years since their last release, Converge return with The Dusk In Us: a brutal but beautiful album that shows the band’s artistic evolution while still capturing their classic sound. The ninth full-length from the Boston-based heavy-music innovators—vocalist Jacob Bannon, guitarist Kurt Ballou, bassist Nate Newton, and drummer Ben Koller—The Dusk In Us proves to be both dark and hopeful, abrasive and melodic, devastating and powerfully cathartic.

Backtrack – Bad To My World [LP]

Backtrack returns with “Bad To My World,” their first album since 2014’s “Lost In Life.” Along with longtime producer Nick Jett (Terror), they entered the Wild Arctic studio to lay down 10 brand-new songs with Dean Baltulonis (Madball, No Warning). Backtrack continues in the classic NYHC tradition of bands like Madball, Killing Time and Outburst while still remaining fresh and injecting their own unique flavor into the timeless sound.

No Warning – Torture Culture [LP/Tape]

After nearly a decade away, No Warning returns with “Torture Culture,” a third album that is as scrappy, self-assured and unrelenting as it was once unthinkably improbable. The new album is grimy, pulverizing and antagonistic street punk in a mind-meld with menacing metalcore, comprised of towering riffage, blistering solos and raw vocals. No Warning don’t so much as borrow hooks from the past as they’ve studied the very essence of what’s come before, from Bay Area thrash metal to New York Hardcore, from post-grunge melody to melancholy balladry and back again, all through their own lens of discontent, simmering noncompliance and stark rage. Vinyl version includes digital download.

Converge – I Can Tell You About Pain b/w Eve [7″]

Epitaph and Deathwish are proud to announce “I Can Tell You About Pain b/w Eve” from aggressive music pioneers, Converge. This two song 7”EP/Digital release is the first new music from the band since their highly regarded 2012 album “All We Love We Leave Behind”. Upon first listen it’s apparent that Converge has evolved exponentially in those years. The raw emotion and anger of “I Can Tell You About Pain” is truly unsettling.

Second Press: 2000 – Opaque Orange

Mike Gitter – Xxx Fanzine (1983-1988): Hardcore & Punk In The Eighties [Book/Book+LP]

“xXx Fanzine (1983-1988): Hardcore & Punk In The Eighties” isn’t merely a collection of articles, reviews and photographs from one of hardcore America’s best-known fanzines. It’s a chronicle of punk’s evolution in the ’80s: a story of music and ideologies in motion. xXx’s story picks up while the first wave of hardcore was in full swing. Major players including Minor Threat had already released landmark records and bands were loading up station wagons to play now infamous venues like The Channel, A7 or D.C. Space. While based in Boston, MA, xXx’s main writer and editor, Mike Gitter, not only concentrated on his own city’s burgeoning scene, spearheaded by bands like S.S. Decontrol and DYS, but looked to other states and countries for xXx’s reportage. This 288-page book documents a time when hardcore and punk were not mutually exclusive and bands and cities had a chance to develop their own diverse and strident sounds.

Straight Edge – A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History, By Tony Rettman [Book]

Starting in 1981 via Minor Threat’s revolutionary call to arms, the clean and positive straight edge hardcore punk movement took hold and prospered during the 1980s, earning a position as one of the most durable yet chronically misunderstood music subcultures. Straight edge created its own sound and visual style, went on to embrace vegetarianism, and later saw the rise of a militant fringe. As the “don’t drink, don’t smoke” message spread from Washington D.C., to Boston, California, New York City, and, eventually, the world, adherents struggled to define the fundamental ideals and limits of what may be the ultimate youth movement.
